MATH-1700-ES31
Welcome to the home page
for Section ES31 of MATH-1700 (Calculus 2)
at Southeast Community College
in the Winter term of 2018.
I am Toby Bartels, the instructor.
Administration
Here is material about the administration of the course:
Assignments
If you miss an assignment, then you can find it here.
Most graded work is done in class;
although it can be made up outside of class, regular attendance is important.
Resources
The official textbook for the course
is the 3rd Edition of University Calculus: Early Transcendentals
by Hass et al published by Addison Wesley (Pearson).
You should be able to get this at the bookstore
(in hardback, looseleaf, or online access),
and most assignments will come from it.
(This same book is used
for MATH-1600 and MATH-2080 too.)
If you get the book with online access,
you can also use MyMathLab integrated into the Moodle course;
this is optional.
(If you bought MyMathLab access for a previous course using this book,
then you may need to see me about a free upgrade,
but you shouldn't have to pay for it again.)
One way or another, you need a copy of this edition of this textbook.
I also have some lecture notes, handouts, links, and so forth.
Many of these will be part of the assigned reading,
so let me know if you have any difficulty accessing them.
- My supplemental texts
containing my notes on the material
(required).
- Tutoring schedule (optional).
- Moodle
course
with integrated MyMathLab
(optional).
- Computer algebra systems that will do integrals, as well as much more
(optional, prices may be out of date):
- Sage
(free to download, free for most uses online,
$7.00 per month or more to make intensive computations online);
- Maxima
(free to download);
- Maple
($99.00 to download, or $79.00 per year);
- Wolfram Mathematica
($155.00 to download, $80.00 per year online);

(free for some uses online, $4.75 per month for advanced features,
$2.99 for a smartphone app with intermediate features).
